“The Unreturning” By Wilfred Owen
https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-unreturning-2/ ANALYSIS: The poem “ The Unreturning” by Wilfred Owen, creates a sense of questions and chills. This poem asks the reader what happens after death. In this poem the author is going through the process of death. They don’t know what is happening or where the are. He sees people he once knew in life, but now they’re dead. He sees everything is turned upside down and doesn’t know what to think. He uses words such as, “Thunder-walled” and “indefinite” to show that he is scared and frightened. The author sets up the poem making it seem like he is still on earth but something had happened, like a war or maybe a natural disaster. Then, by the end of the poem he says, “ dreaded even a heaven with doors so chained,” shows the reader that he’s in the afterlife but it doesn’t seem like the loving heaven everyone talks about. He is confused to why no one is speaking to him and why everyone is going around like zombies. If this is supposed to be heaven isn’t there suppose to be light, cheerfulness, and love. Shouldn’t people be talking and dancing. On earth the afterlife was talked about as going to heaven and being a “better place,” however, it’s not. It is dark and scary and no one to speak too. The author uses harsh words to show the characters are dead and motionless. He uses these strong words to get the idea of death across, there is no great or beautiful afterlife, it is scary and lifeless. Owen writes this poem to question the after life. He is on the verge of a painful process, death, and doesn’t know if there will be a heaven. People have always said heaven was a better place, but what if it isn’t. What if there is just hell. Owen leaves the recurring question about what happens when we die, is it scary, or is it the heaven we have always thought there was. My favorite line from this poem is “I dreaded even a heaven with doors so chaine.” This line makes it seem like heaven has a lock and that heaven has always been just a lie we tell ourselves so we can live for something. Humans want to feel they have a purpose and that when they die they go to heaven, where it is a better place. Where we live with all the people who have died before us. I strongly like this poem, as i am a believer in god and heaven. I also believe that we come back to life as other people. But if we don’t is there a heaven and a hell. Or is it just nothing, lifeless. Which then makes the question if it is nothing, then why live to die. Why live to become something great and then just die and become another headstone. Life is complicated, but afterlife is much more complicated. We have no one to come back and say “hey don’t worry you’re going to heaven, or hey don’t try nothing happens.” Because once someone is dead, we no longer see them anymore. They’re gone. Which once again brings the question of what happens when we die. But until someone visits me and tells me then that question will remain until I die.

http://www.powderkegmagazine.com/nicole-steinberg/ Nicole Steinberg obviously does not care… I mean she specifically says it. Steinberg makes me laugh sometimes. She is so explicit and real with the world and how she feels. In this poem Nicole is speaking again of her body and how she just doesn’t care about what she does or eats. Nicole basically describes what every girl is thinking and how they feel. She is a very realistic and right on about the life of an average girl. My favorite line from this poem is, “Nothing taste as good as feeling f****ed up on cake.” This line just adds the extra emphasis on how she feels. Steinberg adds a vulgar twist to her poems and her use of fingernails makes me cringe. With this word it adds the grungy look on society and how she feels about it. Nicole Steinberg as we know is an outcast of society. She’s funny, smart, and a little quirky. She doesn’t want to be like the average girl that we see everyday. Nor is she. Steinberg writes in her own creative and quirky way which draws the reader in. It gets kinda hard analyzing her poems considering that she basically writes about the same thing each time. However, in each poem there is a different twist on it, like the cringing use of words and how she adds her thoughts and feelings where you know it is exactly her. ANALYSIS This poem speaks wonders of Steinbergs entire life. It talks of her mother, father, and childhood; which is actually pretty important in the ways of her writing. Steinberg is speaking about how she has lost herself in the world. She now just wants to sleep all day and get rid of negativity in her life. Which is controversial being that she is negative herself. Steinberg seems to have troubles finding the right man. Is it due to her self esteem though. She’s a very laid back and straight to the point type of girl. She states her opinions right out in the open and doesn’t regret anything she says or does. It makes me wonder if Steinberg is this vague in person. In this poem she speaks about her career, her mother's career, her father’s career, and her personal life. Steinberg is a one way writer, she likes to speak vulgar and express her true self. She doesn’t want to have her thoughts or feelings locked away somewhere, and hide her true self. She sees herself of somewhat of a warrior, “That is where I left her, wounded inside the trap of her own body”. She is an author who seems to have had the worst luck, she has seen things most people never see. Such as heartbreak, abandonment, and self sacrificing. She is a girl that just wants to get by, by being herself. Steinbergs poems always surprise me in the most astonishing ways. Most of the time I don’t completely agree with her yet I respect her honesty. She is an inspiring poet and a figure to look up to. I love how creative she is and how true she is to life. She takes life by the hand and gives it her best. Steinbergs poem “ Nobody gets enough sleep, Okay?” has a realistic feeling to it. At one point in everyone’s life they feel this way. They feel like they aren’t enough, or the haven't given it their best. But in reality everyone is taking the lemons they are handed and doing what they can with them. http://the-toast.net/2013/09/20/three-poems/
Poet: Nicole Steinberg ANALYSIS: Once again Nicole Steinberg writes in an unoriginal way. And if I know her by now she's completely unoriginal. Her work is a type that get right to the point. She writes the things she cares most about or least about and says exactly how she feels. Steinberg relates to real women, real people. She's gets so many great reviews about her work and how much it relates to so many people. She really is a great poet, once warmed up to her. Her vulgar language can sometimes throw someone off but once you learn to relate it becomes an instant connection. When I first began reading Steinberg she threw me off entirely. I didn't like her use of vulgar language of the way she just wrote about anything. She drove me insane. However, now I can see where she is coming from and relate a lot to it. She just a writer you have to warm up to and get a feel for. She most certainly is not your typical poet. In this particular poem she writing of how she is basically not doing any exciting with her life. Steinberg talks of “crying in the laundry room” and “debating of how many slices of pizza to get.” (Most girls problems these days). She the most real person I have ever read and learned about. She really knows how to appeal to her audience and how to be the real girl which too many are embarrassed to admit. I may be a little bias when reading her poems but I think she's pretty great at admitting her real inner and outer self. She's not rich, or too famous. She is not drop dead gorgeous or extremely skinny. She doesn't eat a salad for breakfast lunch and dinner. Except she truly an amazing and beautiful women. She's a great writer who struggles with the every girl daily struggle. Steinberg admits to REAL LIFE. Steinbergs Getting lucky poems are a big hit to the young adult women. It is a small collection of poetry that shows the women we are and the women we strive to be. Our hopes, dreams, and desires all underpinned by our insecurities and fears. Each poem is a different woman. So accurate, you'll find yourself in here. Once you get past all the vulgarities and see how she tells the truth of a real girl growing up in this big world, you will, connect with her. http://www.powderkegmagazine.com/nicole-steinberg/
Poet: Nicole Steinberg ANALYSIS Nicole Steinberg is writer of many words.. She is very straight forward and tells exactly what's on her mind. In this poem she’s talking about the basic girl. She talks about how her hair is ratty and nails have chipped off. She’s a total mess. Which seems to be the norm these days for every girl. In this day and age girls just want to wear sweatpants and tie their hair in buns, Nicole is definitely one of them. She reads blogs, twitters, and listens to podcast on the daily basis and does not have room for an adventure. She eats chick fil a while taking a bubble bath. Nicole diets and reads her horoscope and just wants to get by in life. She just wants to be basic and live her life the easiest way possible. A lot has changed in recent generations, women use to want to dress up and look nice or “dress to impress.” Now it's “take me as I come or get out” there is no more looking nice and girls are much more raggedy. This generation of youth have no desire to even look nice for school or to go to a dinner. They just throw on some clothes and put their hair up and go on with their day. Steinberg is a great example of a modern day girl, she writes as if she cares about nothing and lives her life as if she wants. Steinberg compares her life to a basic b***h and is extremely happy about it. She likes the life of the normal modern day girl. There are no rules for women anymore. We all do what we want and how we want to do it. Nicole Steinberg writes about mature modern day items going on in her life.. whatever pops in her head is what she writes down. If her twitter were to be read it would be just like her poems, straight to the point and exactly what's on her mind. http://bombmagazine.org/article/3340/four-poems
Poet: Nicole Steinberg ANALYSIS: Nicole Steinberg as we know is an outcast of society. She’s funny, smart, and a little quirky. She doesn’t want to be like the average girl that we see everyday. Nor is she. Steinberg writes in her own creative and quirky way, her recent poems published in the magazine BOMB have had a recent pattern, “Getting Lucky in…” then the month that she writes it. In these short poems she writes about whi she wants to be and what she wants to be. In the most recent one I’ve read “Getting Lucky in August” talks about fashion and the sense of feeling sexy. Steinberg seems to be stuck in two worlds, in the first half of her poem she’s mentions “Jackie O” and “the definition of stealthy sexy” it’s the beauty of women on the outside that she also desires. It’s like she defining the most fashionable women and wanting to be just like her. Then in the second half of the poem she goes into the “tomboyish womanly,” she idealizes the modern look on women. Hair thrown up, bagging sweat pants, and of course the messy look all around. Then in the end of her poem she goes on writing about “marine-scented Marines,” as sexy and appealing. Marines are thought of as heros and man made husbands. Steinberg has a way about her writing that just confesses the thoughts of the modern teenage girl. She goes on talking about the expectations a girl is to have like dressing up, looking nice, going to fancy places. Then confesses what every girl is thinking, sweatpants and messy bun. Steinberg is the ultimate confession of a true American girl. She fantasies about a Marine coming in sweeping her up and having a family with her. A true example of the life every American girl dreams of having. Nicole lives in a fantasy world that she idolizes. She writes about all the things she wants to be, the women she hopes to become and the lover she hopes to pursue. The title of her poems in the magazine BOOM come off at first as a little sexual, however, the meaning is her getting lucky in life. It’s about her getting lucky in becoming the women she’s always hoped to be. http://bombmagazine.org/article/3340/four-poems
Poet: Nicole Steinberg Analysis This poem by Nicole Steinberg, shows that she writes about anything that comes to mind. She is an out there writer, which is not a bad thing. She expresses the interest within her own mind and also what may go on in her life. In this poem she is talking about becoming more confident, we should hold the key to our lives and control them. We don’t need to let others control it. In the first stanza she writes “A loose tooth on a first date is a bad omen,” Not literally meaning a loose tooth. She means having a problem or situation within yourself, or not being as confident as one should be is not a good thing on a first date. Steinberg mentions that “What we should all do is enhance our knife skills,” meaning we should all sharpen our confidence and wear those Chiffonade skirts. Steinberg in this poem is talking about confidence and defining it, don’t allow anyone to rain on your parade basically. She likes the feeling of empowerment, and says everyone should. Become our own bosses. Make our own rules. “Forget to pick the kids up from school,” showing something that controls someone every day, should just be forgotten. Don’t let that everyday commitment control the rest of your life. Many of Stenberg’s poems are based off her everyday life and miseries. She speaks of disappointments and empowering of life. She believes in the living of your own life and expressing what you believe in. Steinberg as a person shows her true self even on social media. Nicole Steinberg like I’ve mentioned is outgoing, tell it like it is, fun, confident poet. She like for people to show that they experience the same qualities in life as she does and we’re all just trying to get through this crazy awkward world. I picked this poem specifically because it introduced Steinberg’s qualities and inner thoughts. |
